Hing Potter, Student Affairs Professional

Philosophy Statement

Student Development | Inclusion | Empowerment

With more than seven years working professionally in higher education student affairs, my role has been to support student development by creating space and opportunity. This is essential for students to author their own stories, challenge their experiences, question assumptions, and find their voices to advocate for change.

To echo Angela Y. Davis, "I have a hard time accepting diversity as a synonym for justice. Diversity is a corporate strategy." Therefore, it must be through the lens of inclusion that we aim to support all students and model ourselves in the way we wish to see our future. After all, it is not just enough to invite people to the dance. We must ask them to actually dance.

Student development, inquiry and growth cannot take place without validating student's value and worth. Through empowerment, students can be encouraged to enter brave spaces, self identify, and begin to form their own social fabrics to ignite change against the status quo.
