Solutions Minded with a Multicultural Lens

Self-Aware of Cultural Perspectives & Privilege

Strategic Systems Thinker

Everyday in student affairs, we are asked to serve a multiculturally diverse student demographic. The life experiences and backgrounds of our students cover a wide range, including varying experiences socially, technologically, politically, and racially, and differing backgrounds in terms of gender and geography. As enrollment increases, the demand to ensure student's needs are met will only become more intricate and intersectional.

My abilities to acknowledge these vast differences are something I pride myself on, while creatively working with others to create entrepreneurial solutions that foster student success.

I believe that in order to support students to explore their own intersectionality, it is only proper that I continue to build on my own understandings of my perspectives, lived experiences and positions of privilege.

As a transracial adoptee (TRA) from Cambodia, part of this personal journey has been to reclaim my Khmer identity. From this, I have been able to share and advocate for spaces and practices in higher education to allow other TRA students and professionals to explore their mixed identities. I've also worked to explore other identities including the worth and value they bring. Yet, I am still learning.

My ability to inquire, investigate and examine different environments and functionalities across higher education has become a developed skill. I am able to consider various systems and designs as well as the potential impact on student success they might have.

The evolution of higher education and student affairs must continue meet student where they are at, which also requires an understanding of policies, standards, values and outcomes. This is something that I will continue to consider, and collaborate with others to ensure a comprehensive approach in supporting students.
